It’s possible that too much of a good thing can be bad for you, and that could very well be a problem for so-called “Gym Junkies.” According to this article in The Herald Sun, ” which cites a recent psychological study “…excessive exercise — categorised as more than six hours a week with a high dependence on the activity — could be damaging to physical and psychological health.”
The study found that “23 per cent had a higher than normal dependence on physical activity.” In other words, 23% hit the gym more than 6 hours a week, or an hour a day with one day a week off. Most athletes are either at the gym or exercising far more than 6 hours a week, and most people who make it to the gym every day end up spending more than an hour a day.
Still, the psychological dependence aspect is an interesting notion; becoming addicted to the gym. Barring physical injuries from over training, being part of the 23% of gym goers who are excessive exercisers is a much better option than falling into the “overweight” category, which, for the US, is 74.1% of the population.
